Trademarks

A trademark is a characteristic representation of a product or a service. It may consist of e.g. words, letters, numerals, a logo, figures or of combinations thereof. A trademark can also be a sound, a fragrance, a colour or a slogan.

By registering a trademark, the company secures the exclusive right to the mark allowing it to prevent others from using the same or a similar mark for the same or similar goods and services.

A registered trademark must come into use within 5 years of registration. The registration may be maintained for an indefinite period of time provided that it is renewed every ten years and that the mark is being used.

Registration of a trademark makes it easier for the company to prove its rights. The registration accurately defines the scope of the rights. At the same time, the company is more certain not to infringe the rights of others when marketing its products.
